Legacy Begins Here
From Wiley Pope to the generations of today, this family’s story has been shaped by resilience, service, and purpose. Spanning centuries, this legacy reflects a commitment to community, justice, and progress. On this page, we share just a glimpse of that history, from pivotal moments long ago to the contributions being made today , honoring those who came before and inspiring those who will follow.
From the banks of the Missouri River in Quindaro, Kansas, our family’s legacy began with a remarkable act of courage and love. Wiley Pope’s fight for freedom in 1860 led to the issuance of the first Writ of Emancipation in Kansas, a milestone that changed the course of our history. His life and marriage to an Irish immigrant during a time of division stood as a quiet defiance against the laws and prejudices of the day.
The generations that followed carried that same spirit forward. Our ancestors played a vital role in the Underground Railroad, turning their home and community into a safe passage for those escaping slavery. During the Civil War, members of our family served in the Union’s Douglas Artillery Unit, fighting for the freedom and equality of all people.
Charles Edward Pope Sr. continued that tradition of service and leadership in the 20th century. His dedication to community advancement and public service laid the foundation for the work we continue today through the Charles Edward Pope Senior Foundation.
These roots run deep, grounded in resilience, sacrifice, and a belief in justice; shaping who we are and the values we uphold.
